BALANCE STRENGTH FLEXIBILITY

We usually have natural tendencies and biases towards one or the other in our practice. Undoubtedly, I favoured the pursuit of strength when I started yoga. But the beauty of these asanas lies in their potential to cultivate the same qualities of mind. All the strength in the world is useless when we cannot remain balanced or flexible enough to consider differing points of view and new ideas, or remain conscious and aware in our day-to-day lives. Conversely, too much flexibility may inhibit our standing firm when we really need to. If the word vinyasa means 'to place in a special way' then the essence of our practice might be that we cultivate the ability to place not just our bodies but also our thoughts and attention in a special, considered way.
